Hair Memorial Necklace Guide: Wearing Them Next To Your Heart
We’re a well-established small business offering careful handling of your loved ones’ locks of hair and fur. Thousands of clients have sent in hair over the years from all over the world. Trust is the most important part of our business, it’s all based on that. This hair memorial necklace guide will explain why clients have been chosing us for over a decade.
Introduction: The Power of a Lock of Hair
There’s a huge emotional weight of hair keepsakes (first haircuts, lost loved ones, or “rainbow bridge” pets). A hair memorial necklace is a little bit of someone’s hair or fur inside a necklace, whether that’s a locket or a resin stone or sphere.

Choosing Your Style: Enclosed or Open Hair Necklaces
Precious hair can be hidden safely within a locket or even forever encased in a sealed hollow precious metal bead (please enquire!). Or you can showcase the hair in crystal-clear resin, tinted with colours, sparkle, opal and precious metal leaf!

We usually shape the hair in a simple swoop but we can coil or cross it over, create a heart or even in some pieces a tree of life. It can be chopped (gorgeous for horse hair!), tinted or even guilded with gold leaf.
The Process: From Post Office to Pendant
How much hair is needed?
For hair jewellery we usually ask for a thin lock that’s an inch or two long (5cm) but we’re happy to work with a single strand! We ask you to send us a photo with your hair next to your thumbnail or a penny for scale, we’ll draw on the photo to show how much we need you to send but sometimes clients send in JUST ONE STRAND and that’s fine too. Don’t send it all, in case it’s lost in the post.

Shipping Safety:
To keep your inclusions safe, every order is marked with a QR code, your name and order number. We’ll send you a FREE kit with this on for you to return it to us by tracked delivery. We mark your order and at every stage so you can log in and check any time you like. When it’s your turn in the queue we can even send you a proof photo on request, so you can see how your hair looks in a mockup before we add it to the proper piece. All mockup pieces and spare stones are returned to you free of charge.
Customisation:
You can add other inclusions such as blood, breastmilk, or cremation ashes alongside the hair. We can add birthstones and any engraving free of charge and the sky is the limit with inspiration. We’ve been doing this for over a decade and can do any technique. Nikki teaches over on her YouTube channe.

Caring for Your Memorial Necklace
To keep the resin and silver or gold looking its best it’s very important to follow our care instructions to the letter. Advice on UV exposure, chemicals, and water. Take it off before you shower, fake tan, dye your hair and go to the gym, for example. Clean the metal with a jewellery polishing cloth and get in touch if you forget any of the instructions and would like a repair.
Thank you
Why choose an artisan like Tree of Opals? Recently we posted why our pieces sometimes take a little longer than other companies. It’s something we’re proud of! One client posted that she’d rather wait six months than have something rushed in six days. Don’t worry, it won’t take six months but you get the idea. We are a British mum-owned and mum-run business paying a living wage. Most of our items are 100% handmade with recycled precious metals, like the Gold Rebecca Hair Necklace which we make by melting down unloved gold rings.
